Breaking Cooperation! NAAI Signs Academic MOU with the UK’s National Edge AI Hub to Jointly Advance Global Edge Intelligence Innovation

Recently, the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI) and the UK’s national-level research platform — the National Edge Artificial Intelligence Hub (National Edge AI Hub) — officially signed a Memorandum of Academic Cooperation. This collaboration marks the launch of in-depth synergy between the two countries in the field of Edge AI, focusing on technological breakthroughs, ecosystem building, and industrial implementation to jointly drive the global intelligent infrastructure towards a more trustworthy, real-time, and efficient direction.

As one of the core partners in this cooperation, the National Edge Artificial Intelligence Hub is a world-class research platform funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and led by Newcastle University. Covering the project period 2024–2029, it boasts a total funding scale of £10.3 million (EPSRC Reference: EP/Y028813/1). Its full name is “National Edge Artificial Intelligence Hub for Real Data: Edge Intelligence for Cyber-disturbances and Data Quality,” with a core mission to address key challenges in the full data transmission chain — ensuring AI data quality, learning reliability, and system resilience in real-world scenarios such as cyber-disturbances, data instability, or security threats.

Guided by the core motto “Empowering AI at the Edge — resilient, real-time, trustworthy,” the Hub focuses on four key research themes: first, the design of intelligent algorithms in edge computing architectures to enable efficient AI inference and distributed learning across devices and network layers; second, research on the robustness and trustworthiness of data and models to ensure stable and accurate AI operation in disturbed or attacked environments; third, exploring the impact mechanisms of network disturbances (e.g., latency, packet loss, attacks) on intelligent systems and corresponding defense strategies; fourth, focusing on four typical application domains — healthcare, intelligent transportation, energy systems, and smart cities — to promote technology validation and implementation.

In terms of organization and cooperation, the Hub has built a strong collaborative network: led by Newcastle University, it unites top UK universities including Imperial College London, Durham University, and the University of Southampton, while bringing together over 50 industry partners covering sensor manufacturing, communication networks, edge hardware, AI software, and system integration. This forms a multi-disciplinary, cross-sector, and inter-institutional research ecosystem, accelerating the migration of AI from the cloud to the edge and from theory to practice.

Currently, edge computing is undergoing a critical transition from the “technology introduction phase” to the “large-scale application phase,” and the sinking of AI inference to the edge has become a core trend in industrial intelligence. As an important academic institution in the global AI field, NAAI has long been committed to promoting AI technological innovation and security governance. Previously, it has collaborated with research forces from various countries to establish international exchange platforms for AI security governance. This cooperation with the National Edge AI Hub will fully integrate the advantages of both parties in academic research, industrial resources, and scenario applications, conducting joint research on key issues such as edge intelligence robustness technology, security protection systems, and industry standard formulation, helping to address industry pain points such as fragmentation and ecological isolation in edge computing implementation.

In the future, the two parties will deepen cooperation through academic seminars, personnel exchanges, and joint project research, accelerating the popularization of edge AI technology in key global industries and laying a solid foundation for building a safer, more efficient, and sustainable intelligent society.
