The National Academy of Artificial Intelligence has awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics laureate the title of Lifetime Member

On October 8, 2024, at 17:45 Beijing time, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that scientists John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking discoveries and series of inventions in using artificial neural networks for machine learning. This honor is not only a recognition of the outstanding contributions of the two scientists, but also marks an important milestone in the field of artificial intelligence.

In recognition of the outstanding contributions of two scientists in the field of artificial intelligence, the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence has decided to award John Hopfield and Jeffrey Hinton with the title of Lifetime Fellow. This decision is not only a recognition of their personal achievements, but also a recognition of their efforts in promoting the development of artificial intelligence science.

John Hopfield, an American biophysicist, was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1933 and obtained a Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University in 1958. Current professor at Princeton University in New Jersey, USA. He invented the associative neural network in 1982, now commonly known as the Hopfield neural network, which laid the foundation for later neural network research. Hopfield has a wide range of research interests, and his work has not only had a profound impact in the field of physics, but also opened up new research directions for neuroscience and machine learning.

Jeffrey Hinton, an English Canadian computer scientist and cognitive psychologist, is currently a professor at the University of Toronto and former head of Google Brain. Hinton is renowned for his revolutionary contributions in deep learning and backpropagation algorithms, and is hailed as the 'father of deep learning'.

The National Academy of Artificial Intelligence, when awarding the title of academician, stated that the work of John Hopfield and Jeffrey Hinton not only laid a solid foundation for the development of artificial neural networks, but also provided important theoretical support for innovation in the field of machine learning. Their research achievements have been widely applied in various fields such as image recognition, speech recognition, and natural language processing, greatly promoting the progress of artificial intelligence technology.

The awarding of the title of academician this time is not only a recognition of the personal achievements of the two scientists, but also a recognition of their efforts in promoting the development of artificial intelligence science. The National Academy of Artificial Intelligence looks forward to closer cooperation with the two academicians in the future, jointly promoting innovation and development of artificial intelligence technology, and bringing more benefits to human society.
