Thomas Villmann’s research spans major areas of machine learning and computational intelligence, including:

  • Prototype-based vector quantization and learning vector quantization (LVQ) 

  • Self-organizing maps (SOM) and neural maps 

  • Computational intelligence and pattern recognition 

  • Machine learning and relevance learning methods 

  • High-dimensional data analysis, non-standard metrics & classification learning

  • 400+ Publications in international journals, conferences, and edited volumes (including extensive work on LVQ and neural learning methods). 

  • Areas of contributions include prototype learning, unsupervised and supervised vector quantization, adaptive learning, and interpretability in machine learning. 

  • Active involvement in the machine learning research community with co-authorships across international labs and research groups.
