Raj Reddy, born in June 1937 in Andhra Pradesh, India, is a US citizen and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the US Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Indian National Academy of Sciences, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is also the Mozah Bint Nasser Chair Professor of Computer Science and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science.

Roger Reddy obtained a Bachelor's degree from the University of Madras in India in 1958; Obtained a Master's degree in Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia in 1960; Obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1966; From 1966 to 1969, he served as an assistant professor of computer science at Stanford University; In 1969, he became an associate professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University; Promoted to full professor in 1973; From 1979 to 1991, he served as the director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University; In 1984, he became a lecture professor and was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering in the same year; From 1991 to 1999, he served as the Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University; Elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2009.

He led a research team to develop speech recognition systems such as Hearsay I and Harpy, with Hearsay I being one of the world's first systems capable of performing continuous speech recognition.
